Fraud & Scams

  • Early release of super
    You may be contacted by a scammer pretending to be a financial planner who promises they can help you apply for early access to your super for a small fee. They may advise that they will need to receive the payment directly to their account.

    Once they’ve received the money, the fraudster May deduct a large fee before handing the rest of the money over to you or in the worst case, give you nothing.
    Remember, you need to meet the ATO’s eligibility criteria before you can withdraw your super.
  • Investment scams
    You may receive an unsolicited call or email from a fraudster advising of a lucrative investment opportunity, which promises quick returns. The fraudster may also send you documentation to convince you that it is a legitimate product.

    Often, the fraudster would contact you multiple times and pressure you into committing to the investment. Additionally, they may suggest that you withdraw your super to top up the investment.

    If something seems too good to be true, it’s likely to be a scam.
  • Phishing scams
    Phishing is the fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information often your personal information. This can start out like a normal conversation with someone talking to you about a service and over time asking personal information about you so they can steal your identity or personal information. Make sure they you do not provide personal information via unsolicited calls, text or email.
  • Identity theft

    Generally the information that is stolen is:

    • Name
    • Date of birth
    • Driver’s licence number
    • Address
    • Secret questions
    • Place of birth
    • Credit card details
    • Tax file number
    • Medicare card details
    • Passport information
    • Online account username and login details

  • SMSF Scams
    Please be careful when receiving cold calls from people claiming to be able to assist you in setting up a SMSF.

Online security

  • Keep your account up-to-date
    Ensure that we have your latest details including your address and phone number. It is important that we are able to contact you promptly if we detect any unusual activity occurring on your account.
  • Keep your details safe
    Never share personal information such as your date of birth, address, full name or financial details with anyone. Scammers may attempt to convince you to hand over your details via a call, text or email and divulging such information makes it easier for them to compromise your bank and super accounts.

    If you are unsure when contacted by someone who says they are from Australian Catholic Super, call us on 1300 658 776 to confirm that the enquiry is legitimate.
  • User secure passwords
    Change your password regularly and make it secure. Passwords should be difficult to guess, which means that they should not contain identifying information such as your name or date of birth.

    Combine lower and upper case alphabets with special characters and numbers to strengthen your password. Never use the same password for all your online accounts.
  • Do not interact with unsolicited emails or texts
    If you are unsure of the legitimacy of an email or text that looks like it has been sent from Australian Catholic Super, do nor click on any links without verifying it with us.
  • Delete emails containing personal information
    If you need to send an email that contains personal information such as your date of birth, driver’s license or passport details, see if you can encrypt the email or use a password to protect any attachments.

    After you’ve sent the email, delete it immediately to reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your personal details in the event your email account is hacked.
  • Protect your devices
    New types of computer viruses are constantly being developed, so ensure that you have the latest version of an anti-virus software on your laptop, PC and handheld devices to protect your information.
